Coaching is the process of altering behavior or developing a clients skillset based on their objectives.
Our experience enables us to offer effective coaching services by working with clients to identify and meet their individual goals.
Coaching is very similar to therapy and counseling but has two main differences:
Some coaching topics may include, but are not limited to, self-esteem, time management, procrastination, cognitive thought processes, career development, relational communication, and much more. See our services for more.
Self-esteem is the belief in oneself to accomplish a goal. Whether that be being a "good person" or finishing a homework assignment. Assertiveness is the ability to advocate for your wants and needs and is essential to living a healthy happy life.
Members of marginalized groups (i.e. neurodivergent and LGBT+ people) often struggle with self-esteem and assertiveness due to systemic oppression. However, thought patterns leading to low self-esteem can be unlearned just as they can be learned! Together we can work to create a better sense-of-self and learn skills that will enable you to advocate for yourself in a healthy way.
Reading, taking notes, paying attention to lectures, studying for tests, writing essays, these are all skills you will likely need to succeed in a university setting. They are also skills that many students struggle with, especially if they never had to study before. Many neurodivergent people excelled at school and therefore never adopted good study habits, but college is a whole new ball game. Through coaching we can refresh or create good study habits that may enable you to reach your goals.
Neurodiversity is the neural or brain differences in humans that are part of normal biodiversity. Autism, ADHD, dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia, Tourette's, intellectual disability, and epilepsy fall under this category. There are also arguments that PTSD, OCD, and other conditions could be considered neurodiverse in nature.
Neurodivergence is not something that can or should be "cured" or "fixed." Instead, each individuals strengths should be capitalized on and accommodations should be created to mitigate weaknesses. Coaching focuses on finding these strengths and accommodating weaknesses.
Executive Functions are the tools needed to perform complex tasks. You can think of the skills a business executive might need to run a company.
Many neurodivergent, gifted and talented, and otherwise "intellectual" people struggle with tasks that others find simple. This can be confusing and frustrating; for example, someone with executive functioning difficulties may think "everyone say's I'm smart but I cannot even get to class on time." Intelligence is not executive functioning.
Through coaching, we can work to accommodate your personal struggles and add tools to your metaphorical toolbox.
